Legislate the CRPD!

What?

Legislate the CRPD is a silent manifestation outside of the parliament where we present our demand – the CRPD must be turned into Swedish law. We hand out flyers and talk to by passers, politicians, and civil servants of the parliament.

When?

Every Thursday between 12 am and 1 pm at Riksgatan, Stockholm. We will cancel if it is colder than -5 degrees Celsius or if there is too much snow.

Why?

  • Sweden ratified the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in 2008. According to the convention, it is not permitted to impair our rights except in extreme exceptional cases. Nevertheless, it has become more and more difficult for us to have our rights fulfilled. Authorities and courts do not care about what is written in the convention because it is not law.
  • The Convention on the Rights of the Child was legislated in Sweden in 2020. As a result, the authorities have taken children’s rights much more seriously. This is of course good news, but it also shows that conventions need to become a part of the legislation before anything starts happening. Furthermore, the government should not be able to choose to turn one convention into law and ignore another.
  • In autumn 2022, the Norwegian government decided to enter the convention into Norwegian law. By the end of 2023 at the latest, legal experts must produce proposals on how this can be implemented. Sweden needs to do the same in order not to fall behind.

Who?

STIL – The Founders of Independent Living in Sweden och Swedish Youth Federation of Mobility Impaired were the organizations who started the manifestation, but others have joined us as well. We welcome everyone who stands behind our demand.
